How one can be saved by sci-fi technology and a mythical creature from Lord of the Rings in a date on Hogwarts gardens
The breezy afternoon in Hogwarts gardens was the perfect weather for Chad`s date with Emily. He had liked her for some time now, but she only had eyes for that non binary bitch, as he called William, the new kid. He, or she, or whatever he thought those people called themselves had started seeing another freak, Lisbeth, the bald girl with deep voice that scared him, so Chad saw it as an opportunity to 'kill' at the quiditch match during the past weekend, which in his head was what would clearly seal the deal with Emily. After all, she did not manage to say no in the corner of their Slitheryn quarters where he pinned her to ask for, what he believed was this much anticipated date.
She walked beside him through the clearing next to the school building, well dressed for the weather. He thought that maybe that was the reason why she would not hold hands with him, and he blamed the climate for the coldness of the entire date itself. He was used to under dressed girls who asked for his body`s closeness for heat. Although Emily and his last girlfriend did not share a need to wear skirts, he felt they clearly had much in common. Their rich parents, their Hogwarts house, their grades and obvious beauty, but for some reason they had not managed to establish much more than that with their vague and awkward conversation. Instead, she followed him around and listened , half minded, to his stories. When he realized she was not going to own up to her part of the conversation, he decided on a spot to sit, next to some weird looking trees.
"Still, he felt the need to point out she was obviously in charge of supplying comfort for their date and clearly neglected it."
"Did you brink a blanket" he asked, knowing she couldn`t possibly have any such thing inside her coat, being as tight as it was around her chest. Still, he felt the need to point out she was obviously in charge of supplying comfort for their date and clearly neglected it. As she shook her head he shrugged ironically thinking of the amount of points she had lost in his mind score, just now.
They chose to sit on a protruding root as to avoid the moist ground around the tree he had picked as a seating area, and he leaned back on the tree trunk to rest and restart his monologue. He covered everything from his favorite subjects to his grades, favorite spots to chasing girls in Hogsmead, from best places for Butter Beer near the Diagonal Alley to how often his dad mentioned the Minister of Magic. He left little to no opening for her to give her input on pretty much anything, so all she could master was the ocasional 'sure' or the most frequent 'yes, I know where that is', when he needed to make sure she knew of one of the amazing places he usually frequented, a must in his book. He started to feel more secure about her possible place beside him as he confirmed that she had been or at least knew of the places sports and things he had mentioned.
Her face did not change much. From all his stories about how him and the guys falling drunk on more than one occasion on school grounds to the day he and his friend Branden attempted to actually break into Dumbledore`s office to tickle his phoenix, but failed when Mrs. McGonagol caught them attempting a couple of misspelled spells by his office door, nothing he said interested her much. However, he failed to noticed, thinking of her alert, taking in all his glory when, in fact, she was fighting enormous urges to yawn on that eerie and endless afternoon. She was about to try to weight in, hoping to share some of her views about the new Minister of Magic`s policies, when the seat beneath them moved.
They weren`t unfamiliar to Hogwarts`s weird beings and the fact that more than one piece of furniture had, in fact, moved beneath them on more than one occasion was not at all strange, but a tree was something new. They would think themselves insane if not for the fact that both of them felt it.
Strangely enough, the root shifted just enough to show a small whole on the ground underneath it, and inside it, a dim blue light shone. Emily approached it, and was met by nervous screaming from Chad, who was clearly afraid but decided to disguise it by being overly manly and take the lead. But for whatever reason, the root was unhappy with him coming closer and knocked him out of the way, leaving him unconscious on the ground next to her, who understood nothing.
She had watched him freak out and now watched him lay flat on his back with a vague expression. She decided to go for the whole on the ground and cease her curiosity when a deep voice began speaking to her, extremely slowly.
"The Ent then proceeded to pick it up and place it back inside the whole. He then laid over it, leaving his root up, just as before, in case some other girl having a terrible time ever needed it"
'I ... Though ... He would never ... Shut up`
She stood in place, her eyes wide, mouth agape, waiting for the creature to finish talking and stand up. It took a while. What stood in front of Emily now was a human like tree, the root she and Chad had sat on before was clearly something resembling a foot. It lazed and yawned, much like she wished she could had done moments earlier. It then bent and reached for the blue light inside the whole.
'Here.' It said, reaching out its branch hand towards her, a small blue aparatus hanging between its leaf like fingers. She held it and waited for him to speak its slow paced words.
'Humans invented it..... Long ago... If you.... Turn the numbers.... To a date ... Back in time .... It will ... Reset time... Gone by....'
She looked at the thing in her hand in awe. Much more awe than she looked at the talking tree standing in front of her. Many questions rushed through her mind. How did it end up there? Who made it? But the most important question was the only one she muttered.
'Will I lose it?' She asked, overly concerned about not having the amazing thing she had just found, if she decided to use it.
'You will ... For all this time ... Will not... Come to pass...'
She looked at the passed out boy next to her and back at the speaking creature.
'Would you do it?' She asked it, doubtfully.
'If it meant ... Not having .... To spend... Another moment .... With that ...' The tree pointed at the knocked out body next to her 'I`d do it.... In a human... Heart beat' It finished.
She pondered at its slow words for a second and twicked the blue thing in her hands. A moment later she and the boy disappeared, the blue gadget fell on the ground in front of where she had just stood.
The Ent then proceeded to pick it up and place it back inside the whole. He then laid over it, leaving his root up, just as before, in case some other girl having a terrible time ever needed it. It was amazing how they were the ones that always spotted it. And before falling asleep once again, the Ent imagined that, wherever those two were, the girl would master the courage to say no, and neither her nor him would ever have to listen to that boy's voice ever again.
